The Dreamer

The life of a dreamer can never be completely fulfilled. Every time a dream is achieved the dreamer inevitably conjures up another dream to chase after and the cycle continues and nature takes its course to the end. Then the dreamer has a party instead of a funeral because to the dreamer death is never the end and they need to enter the new adventure with a bang. The dreamer is usually mostly happy but never complete. Happiness is present because of all the dreamer has achieved, but they are left longing for so much more.

The dreamer is the type of person that will give everything they have to achieve those dreams. They quit their safe lives and risk everything they have because chasing the adventure is worth it to them. The dreamer always goes after the unknown and lives on the adrenaline rush of the “what-if.” Commitment is an uncomfortable, suffocating force them because commitment takes away the “what-if” factor from life. Without this, the dreamer is lost and life becomes a tiresome burden that lacks clarity and hope because the monotony clouds the dreamer’s vision. The dreamer not only loves the adventure of new experiences, they need this adventure. The new experiences can include anything from travels to new boyfriends. To the dreamer, monotony is a death sentence.

I am the dreamer. I am dreamer that struggles with ideas of the future because the future is open and I am the dreamer that doesn’t need a plan. I am the dreamer that would rather be broke and happy than rich and stuck. I am the dreamer that is willing to hop on a plane to anywhere because I know that I will learn something about me and the world. I am the dreamer that never wants to “settle down” because I never want to settle. I’m the dreamer that refuses to settle for anything less than the pursuit of my next dream. I am the dreamer who will always be looking up for my next adventure and for something new. The dream will never end for me.

Some updates since I've been home....

Well, I'm not really sure if anyone even reads this anymore since it's been a month since I've posted but I figured I'd update anyway.

I had written this summary of my New Year's Eve which I plan on posting sometime soon, but I'm still not all the way unpacked and it's written in a notebook somewhere so when I find it I'll be sure to add it.

Life since I've been home has been really slow going... yesterday it was exactly two weeks since I had arrived back in the States and it feels like it's been more than a month. Adjusting to the American way of life again was a little weird at first (I still haven't remastered crossing the street yet), but now everything is pretty much back to normal. I've been working part-time with a head hunter in Port Washington. I'm still looking for a full-time legal job, but the market isn't so great right now so it may take me a little longer than I had anticipated.

I'm almost done with my law school applications and I CANNOT wait to be back in school... it's really nice being 100% sure about what I want to do. My best friend Anne is doing jury duty and I actually went to watch her yesterday and it was so much fun. I don't know many people who voluntarily go and sit in court all day but I loved it. I wanted to go back today but I had to work, bummer!

As far as going out, my life has been pretty boring. I choose to hibernate in the winter because it's so effing cold! I've had a few good nights since I've been home though... all at Sullivan's of course except for Anne's birthday when we went to the city. We hopped around a little before we ended up in a pretty much Port Washington bar (O'Reilly's which is owned by the same people that own Finn's). The five of us were pretty much the only people in there but we ended up having a really great time. Of course shots of tequila (with training wheels... salt and lime) were involved, but what would a night out be without Jose. It's almost like we are on Grey's Anatomy! Anne and I decided to catch the 3:19 home where we were lucky to get a seat, so in true Annemarie style she rests her head on my shoulder and proceeds to fall asleep with her mouth open and everything. The drunk train is always an adventure, but everything was going well until we hit Great Neck. Apparently some drunken assholes decided to get in a fight which was pretty bad and the train was going to be held for 20 minutes. After 40 minutes of being subjected to the whiny Roslyn girls, one of which spent 20 minutes puking into a bag while the other texted her dad, they made another announcement that we would be held for another 20 minutes I decided that I needed to get off that train IMMEDIATELY! So I wake Anne up and inform her that I will be leaving the train and getting a cab home because I just can't take these whiny bitches anymore we get off the train.

So we get off the train and try to hail a cab which goes absolutely; then I see them load the guy into the ambulance so Anne and I walk over to the stairs to get back on the train. This is where we meet "bitch cop of the year" who was pissed off that we were trying to get back on the train. At this point I am absolutely raging... so Anne and I walk past "bitch cop of the year" where I make friends with the equally frsutrated train conductor men who vent with me until we finally arrive in Port Washington at 5:00 am. Ughhh....what a night!

I'm coming home...

It's true, I will be coming home on the night of January 15th. I think that I achieved everything I came to Australia for and now it's time to get back to New York to resume my adult life. I surprised myself and I guess I was ready for that life. Anyway, I'm looking forward to catching up with everyone real soon!

Cultural Nondifferences...

Hey all,

So a few people have been asking me if there are any cultural differences between Australia and America. The short answer is no... there are a few things, but they are VERY subtle differences. I think I've mentioned before, but the main things I've notived are how they say tomato. I have even found that I say tomato the same way that they do now which is pretty annoying. Yesterday at work I also had another Australian slip... I said "how ya going" which is one of the most popular sayings here. Another thing is that they do say mate a lot! Every other word is mate... a typical exchange includes "how ya going, mate?" "Ah mate, I'm alright. How are you going?" or "oi, mate!" which is used to get someone's attention. Other than that they aren't any notable differences.

I hope that answers some of your questions and helps to create a more vivid picture in your head about what Australia is like. Also, they don't have Fosters here anywhere (for anyone that was wondering about that).

I'm working a 60 hour week this week so I probably won't update until I get some time off. I hope everyone has a good week and I'll update again soon.

Ancient History has it's perks...

I’m a little disappointed about my January plans because I had talked about going to New Zealand at the end of January, but it looks like that won’t be possible until April or May because of the month long holiday that I had when I got here. I did enjoy that time, but I wish that I had thought about getting a job about a week or so before I had. I’m not poor, but I do have to budget a lot more now until I can either get another job or more hours at my current job. I was thinking about becoming a doggy daycare sitter because I do love dogs and I do miss Harley (even though he never let me pet or play with him) so it seems like a great idea. I’ll have to wait until after Christmas because no one is hiring at the moment.

All of my friends have been talking about backpacking around Australia and I just haven’t really had an interest in seeing anything in Australia. As I thought about why I wasn’t interested I realized that when I was in Cyprus I was learning about and seeing historical artifacts that existed hundreds of years before Christ. When you see areas or artifacts that are traced back to ancient Greek gods or mythical stories it has such an impact on you because you stand there and imagine these people standing in the same place thousands of years before. I remember going to this coliseum in Cyprus and turning to my friends asking them to imagine how many butts had sat in the same spot. When you sit in a coliseum that has been traced back thousands of years there is a feeling that surrounds the place and it makes you feel insignificant and special at the time. The pyramids and the Sphinx in Egypt have the same effect. When I was crouched in the tunnel on my way down to the tomb of Tatumkamun I was imagining being one of the Egyptians that built this place. It’s so hard to imagine that places this old can even exist because in America we are missing all of that history. Anyway, my point is that Australia is like American and is missing out on all of the ancient history that I found so interesting in Cyprus and Egypt. I don’t really appreciate recent history as much as I do older history. Unless it’s a castle like the one in Hungary that Lindsay and I got lost in… it’s still my favorite memory from my trip.

Lindsay and I were out exploring in Budapest for the day and we had marked out a few sights that we wanted to see because we only had the day to fit it all in so we had to be organized. Anyway, we decided that we wanted to go to this museum which had all of these royal artifacts from the old monarchy in Hungary. The map wasn’t very clear but we had been pretty good navigators up until that point so we figured we would just set out and try to find the museum. We had been walking around the grounds of this castle for a while and were very lost… we got completely turned around and ended up in this restricted area of the castle that no one was supposed to be in. In our effort to find a way out, we stumbled upon this huge empty room that must have been used as a ballroom. It was about 90 degrees that day and we had no water so our nerves were very thin and we were both annoyed at each other. I don’t know what it was about this room, but there was something special and my imagination kicked into high gear and I started to imagine that I was dressed up for a ball and there were tons of people in the room dancing around. I started dancing around the room and made Lindsay join me as well which seemed to lighten our moods a little. After the ball, we found a huge tree in an empty courtyard and sat down to rest for a while. We imagined that we were two princesses who were taking a break from everyday life. Just when we gave up on finding this museum and decided to go back, we ended up walking right into where we were supposed to be all along. I think this is my favorite story because when we finally stopped looking for what we wanted we ran into it by accident. I think that a lot of things in life happen like that… when you finally give up, everything seems to work out. By now I’ve forgotten my point because I was enjoying going back to that moment in Budapest, but I think I was talking about not being interested in traveling Australia. I do plan on going to New Zealand and possibly Antarctica before I come home though. I’ll be two more continents closer to completing my life-long goal of stepping foot on every continent.

Lindsay actually just got here so I have to run, but thanks for being interested enough to read and leave me some comments if you can think of any because I enjoy reading them as well.

Holiday Plans

My friends and I have been attempting to plan our Christmas celebration which is pretty funny because the reason that we are all together is that we are all a bunch of twenty something’s with no plans for the near future. We all get together at our favorite daytime hangout (the balcony of Shark Bar) and look at each other until someone says, “Well, I think we should spend the day on the beach” to which we all reply, “We know! That’s the only part of the day that we have actually planned out.” Then we stare at each other for a while more before someone suggests we barbeque; it’s at this point that the conversation starts to get really interesting. Half of the group thinks that we should have a proper “roast” for Christmas with turkey, and these things called Yorkshire pies, and cranberry, and the works, but no one is willing to volunteer to do the majority of the cooking. The other half of the group wants to just have a simple barbeque which really angers the roasters because they say that Christmas is supposed to formal so we should have a roast on either Christmas Eve or Boxing Day (the day after Christmas). Personally, I think that we should say screw it all and just go to the beach with sandwiches and hang out all day because unless we plan on staying for a while we won’t get a chance to spend Christmas on the beach again. I’ve gotten much calmer and less bossy since I’ve been here so I just sit back and let other people decide what they want to do because being a ping pong ball between the two sides is just wayyy to frustrating for me. I’m thinking that the plan will probably turn out to be a barbeque on the beach because us non-plan-makers won’t be able to pull a plan together before Christmas. We did think of a pretty cute idea for presents though…. We’re going to do a secret Santa so that everyone gets one nice gift instead of a few crap ones.

It’s really weird talking about spending Christmas with people that you just met a few weeks ago because it actually doesn’t feel weird at all. I know that may not make sense to some people, but traveling relationships are in the HOV lane with no traffic. They have to be accelerated because there is no time to waste when you know that you are only in one area for a little while. Also, since no one has their family here we all mesh together and form one big family. For example, in my apartment Dale reminds me of Jeffrey: he likes singing (especially when he’s drunk), he loves going to theater, carries himself like Jeffrey does (stiff and quiet, but throws in those one liners that make you laugh really hard when you’re not expecting a joke), a real rule follower (he won’t go to the express lane at the market with 11 items in his basket because the sign says max. 10), and is as skinny as Jeffrey used to be. Jo reminds me of Mommy because he gets a little upset when he doesn’t get his way, he likes to be the leader, tries to control everyone’s days events (right now he is telling Craig that he has to go to town with him and is getting upset that Craig doesn’t want to go with him right away because he is ready now), he’s very social and likes to help people out whenever he can, he’s very sensitive as well but cares about everyone in the house a lot. Craig is a lot like Daddy (he’s my official garbage disposal… I swear he will eat anything that is left on my plate!), is quiet and just kind of observes, a big difference is that he’s lazier than Daddy (Daddy would never sit around the house all day and do nothing), and he loves sports and takes time to explain the rules and stuff to me (he doesn’t get so stressed out though and he sets up little examples like crates, beer bottles, and spoons to explain cricket to me).

So if it wasn’t bad enough trying to plan Christmas, we have to make a New Year’s Eve plan rather quickly if we plan on spending it at the Sydney Harbour. Ideally, we all want to book a Harbour cruise so that we can see the fireworks from the Harbour and drink for “free” on the boat. Just like in an big city though, the prices are really high for boat cruises so we are all gathering our rent for this month and then we’ll decide if we can afford the cruise or not. Most likely we’ll end up at someone’s apartment and then on the beach or something which will be fun as well.

Piss poor weather has led me to a new addiction…

I can’t even help myself… it’s gotten so bad that I stay up until the sunrise and can’t seem to tear myself away. My roommates are starting to worry that people will start recognizing me when I go to get some more. I’ve tried to cut back, but it keeps pulling me back in like an extra strong gravitational force that you just can’t fight. As soon as it finishes I have to run to town to get more because the urge to continue is over-powering. Are you wondering what sorts of things I’ve gotten myself into this time? The answer may surprise you; it’s the television series Lost. I had never watched an episode before the bad weather hit about a week ago, and now I’m completely hooked and almost halfway through the second season. The past three nights I’ve been up until after 5:00 watching the DVD’s on my computer. I literally cannot stop watching. Here’s an example of just how extensive my addiction is… yesterday I watched six hours of season one and then ran to the video store so that I could rent season two and be back in my apartment before dark. For those of you that know me well, you know it must be pretty bad if I literally ran to the video store to rent three more DVD’s. The show is genius though… it’s very outrageous, but then it brings it back down to earth so that you don’t lose focus. The characters are really well thought out and each contributes to the storyline in a significant way. Anyway, my point is that everyone should rent the DVD’s but only if you have chunks of time in the day to sit down and watch the whole thing.

In other news… well actually there hasn’t been any this week because between the bad weather and the new addiction I haven’t done anything productive (except run to the video store so that I can feel some sense of accomplishment each day). I did, however, realize that it is my happy eight week anniversary today! This may be the start of my longest relationship… I’m already only four weeks away from tying my second longest record. I feel good about this one though!
